The Hunting Crossbow is the weakest (save for the practice crossbows found in Arenas and tournaments) and therefore cheapest crossbow one can find in Pendor. It's so ineffective one typically does not find it in the hands of any respectable soldier, even those of the lowest caliber. It's only users are the like of lowlife Brigands and Bandits. It's recommended that if one has the choice of any other crossbow (such as the more effective and equally ubiquitous Light Crossbow) or perhaps even any other weapon, one should take the other option.

The Hunting Crossbow is easily obtained across all of Pendor. You will find them in shops and markets nearly everywhere for a very low price. Depending on your choices, you'll actually start with this weapon. Such a thing is generally unnecessary, however, as they are also easily obtained by defeating groups of forest bandits, thieves, or highwaymen, who make use of such weapons.
